Louise Dick

GLIG Tsunami Working Party

Photo of Louise Dick

Biography - Louise is a Learning Support Librarian with Wesminster Libraries, and has previously held several positions in FE colleges. After witnessing the tsunami coverage over Christmas 2004, and having just turned 30,
Louise decided to leave her permanent job and look for a volunteering opportunity. During a temporary contract at UK Trade and Investment she came to learn of the GLIG project in Sri Lanka and a partnership
was born.

Abstract - Recovering from disasters - Sri Lanka

GLIG is involved with a twinning project with Hikkaduwa Library, a library badly damaged by the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami.  Members of the Working Party will discuss how the project started; progress and current situation.  Edwina Smart will then speak about her visits to Sri Lanka and how libraries are a vehicle for change.  Through a series of then workshops with reconstructed school libraries the children involved have made great progress.
